Medical Coding Course: Transitioning To A New Career

The economy has been falling for quite some time now and the future does not look any brighter. I am currently an accountant, and I can see all of my co-workers and friends being fired in droves every single month for 6 months straight. It is only a matter of time before I am next.

That’s when I decided to make the shift into a more stable industry – the medical industry. But the thought of going back to school and taking chemistry and biology classes scared me, more than excited me. I wanted to use my current skills and translate them to a new career in the medical field. Fortunately, one of my family members works in the billing industry and suggested I take a look. And as luck would have it, I knew my skills would translate over nicely.

The only thing was that I didn’t have the slightest idea of how to perform the job. So, I did some research and decided I would take a course to cover the core principles I needed to know. I didn’t have much money, so I cut out all of the for-profit schools like University of Phoenix or Devry. I did some research and found a course at my local community college that covered the basics and offered an online class going into the more technical aspects of the job. Plus, I like to network with the instructor. This way I can use the instructor as a reference and also find out about potential job offerings when the course is over.

If you don’t have the cash or time to attend a local offline class, you should seriously consider online medical coding training. You’ll be able to complete the course at your own pace and save substantial amounts of money. Remember, the key elements of the curriculum don’t change.

The main indicator of a great course is the support you have access to. If you’re going for an offline, hands on experience, you need to make sure the course allows you to code real medical claims. If that part is missing, run away from that course as fast as possible. This same line of thinking applies to online courses as well.
