We Love Wii Swords

Can you recall childhood day when you and your friends would have swordfights? Perhaps you pretended to be Jedi’s or Samurai’s and you used sticks from trees or (if you were lucky) long pieces of foam? Evidently, the people at Wii remember those days too, and they have come out with a Wii Sword accessory for the child in all of us. You can also get a lightsaber too, that really lights up, just like a Jedi sword or even Darth Vader’s sword.

The Wii plastic light-up sabers came out for the Star Wars Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels game, and the Wii foam swords were released for the Wii Sports Resort game. However you can use them for other games too, and you will find that they do ad a wonderful sense of realism. It’s true that you can just manipulate the WiiMote around sans sword attachments, but that’s not as much fun as when you have the actual sword attached. When you’re playing against a friend, being able to cross swords with someone literally is highly exciting. You can really get into the game this way without danger of injury and of course in private with no one watching (and laughing).

But unlike some of the other Nintendo Wii accessories, the swords don’t really do anything to improve game play other than to make the controller look and feel more sword-like. And when you point the controller at the screen to access menu controls, you must first remove it from the swords in order for it to work right. This might be inconvenient, but at least the buttons all still work, so it’s really not a problem. Some of the third-party swords have figured out ways to beat the problem, such as hinges that fold the sword down when not in use, and so forth.

Nonetheless, the Wii sword accessories are really fun and amusing to play with, and only cost around $20, so they are well worth the price. Pick some up today, kidnap a friend and let the duels begin. Just ensure that you have moved all the fragile items out of the room first!

  1. Ben says:

Just FYI, as with other Wii accessories that fit the remote controller inside of the body of the add-on gadget, these swords (the Wii Star Wars swords) kind of lose connection with the sensor bar quite often because the accessory housing blocks the signal. Not a reason to not get the swords, but just beware of it.
