If you want to sleep well, you must choose a mattress which can do these two things for you: absorb the pressure on your body when you lie down and preserve the alignment of your spine. Unfortunately, most traditional materials used to make mattresses cannot do both things together. They are factors which oppose each other.
As of today, only four types of mattresses can handle both tasks at the same time and give you the most comfortable sleep: water beds, the most advanced coil spring mattresses, memory foam mattresses and high end air beds. Water beds and air beds work in practically the same way. They both enclose a fluid (water for water beds, air for air beds) within a cell in such a way that it can conform to the shape of your body when you lie down. This absorbs the pressure that you feel. It is as if you are lying down on a soft mattress. At the same time, it prevents your spine from sagging whether you are lying down on your side or on your back in a similar manner to a firm mattress.
The latest high end coil spring mattresses do the same thing, except they use specially shaped coil springs enclosed in individual cells to do the work. Memory foam mattresses are sort of in between – they have a cell-like structure that molds itself to your body when exposed to your body heat and weight. Their rate of compression decreases with the amount of force (your weight) applied to them. For example, the first 10 pounds of weight may compress the layer of memory foam by 1 inch, but 20 pounds of weight will only compress the same memory foam by 1-1/2 inches. This helps to provide support for your spine.
Unfortunately, they all have various problems of their own and they all share the major disadvantage of being very expensive. Fortunately, toppers (a.k.a. mattress pads) can be made out of memory foam. When these memory foam toppers are placed on top of normal (cheap) mattresses, you get much of the comfort of a premium memory foam mattress at a fraction of the cost. There is also the advantage that they are relatively light and can often be rolled up, making them easy for you to transport in your car and saving you expensive transport fees from the furniture store.
Memory foam pads are made at various thicknesses today. Thicker toppers are more comfortable but more expensive so you have to balance your budget against your desire for a more comfortable sleep. The proven brands in the market today are Tempur (or Tempurpedic) and Serta – when they say they use memory foam for their toppers and mattresses you know they are telling the truth.
