There is a relatively new innovation in the field of lighting designed to make life easier – the touch sensitive lamp. Touch lamps sometimes detect the heat of the human body as a signal to switch on the light. Alternatively (and more commonly) they may use the ability of the body to conduct electricity (so called capacitance) to complete a circuit to operate the switch mechanism.
Although anyone will love a touch lamp, and benefit from using it, some people really need home appliances that function more simply than standard appliances and they can really benefit from such a lamp much more than the rest of the general population.
Small Children
Small children like to do things themselves, yet they have often not developed the fine motor skills or hand strength that switching a regular lamp on and off requires. In addition, many switches are located right next to hot light bulbs, and that can be dangerous! If you provide a small child with a bedside light that they can operate easily themselves in the dark it can help them if they wake up scared in the middle of the night as they can easily switch on the light.
People with Injuries and Disabilities
People with arthritis and other painful conditions or injuries find touch lamps essential. Since they can be activated by such simple means, it is easy for a person who encounters pain from making small movements to activate them. A touch table lamp does not even need to be touched in a particular place as in most lamps the whole thing from the lamp shade to the base is touch sensitive.
Those with physical disabilities and limited motion due to neurological or other disorders really appreciate the ability to activate lights without help from others. It can give them a little more independence than would otherwise be the case. People who use service animals can very easily have their animal helper trained to turn lights on and off, and to use the dimming capacity.
