How to Do a Basement Make-over

Sometimes, people wonder if they could do something about their dark, boring basement. They would like to make it more appealing so that when someone has to go down there, especially if that someone is your kid, they would not have to worry about being in the gloomy, scary place. Fortunately enough, there are ways for you to redesign your basement and make it look more inviting. After a simple basement make-over, you would no longer have to say to your child “Yes dear, there is no monster down there. Now would you please get the laundry basket?”

Some basements can be so cold and damp. This is because water and moisture tends to collect there, since the place is the lowest point of your house. You might want to add in there a source of heat like a fireplace or maybe a floor heating system. If you are going for the latter, use water-resistant floor coverings like tiles and vinyl to avoid any damage caused by water. This would make your basement feel warmer.

You could also repaint your basement. Use bright colors to give a light ambiance to the room. This will also give an effect that your basement is wide and open, not suffocating and constricting. You could also add in bold colors but they must be minimal. Bold color gives a feeling of closeness; you might want not to overdo using them for they will defeat your purpose. If you are not going to settle for just plain colors and want to put in some design on your walls, make use of horizontal patterns. This would make the basement appear longer and wider. If you are having doubts about your basement design then you could ask for the help of a decorator.

Before you do any renovation of your own, make sure that you already prepared a basement design. This would help you avoid doing trial-and-error routines and help minimize cost. The more you know what you exactly want, the easier the make-over will be.
