Hard water contains calcium and magnesium in high levels which can be reduced by using a water softener. Hard water takes more soap and detergent for cleaning clothes and dishes. It also leaves some residue on tubs, sinks and toilets. Water softeners contain salt water whose job it is to soften the water. Water softening systems consist of many parts, but the most important water softener parts are the mineral tank and the central processing unit. The mineral tank contains the resin filter and the brine tank.
The central processing unit heads this system. It is made up of three main parts: a water meter, a timer and a valve assembly. The meter keeps a track of the ion level in the softener’s resin filter, and gives it a brine wash when the sodium level is low. The valve assembly is responsible for maintaining a proper flow of the water to the other parts of the system as and when required and the timer regulates when the softener starts and begins work.
The mineral tank houses the resin filter. When water passes through this filter, the resin draws the mineral ions out of it. The calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged here with the sodium ions, and the water after this point in the system is soft.
The brine tank keeps the resin filter clean from the accumulated mineral ions. This tank keeps the resin beads recharged with the sodium ions. The unwanted water containing calcium and magnesium is rinsed from the softener.
The proper operation of any system requires timely maintenance, whether they be water softeners, iron filters, or any other device that keeps your water clean. Specifically, the inner parts of the water softener need frequent care in order to work consistently and supply soft water. The resin filter stays in working condition for almost the entire life of the system but it needs to be often recharged with salt. The nozzles and pipes should stay clean and not obstructed. They can be cleaned with the help of a soft tooth brush and some soap water mixture. Before reinstalling, rinse them thoroughly.
The drain line should not be jammed anywhere from the tank to the outside of the house. During winter season, if the line is exposed outside it may get obstructed due to freezing of water.
If you need to replace any water softener part, you can contact the manufacturer for the appropriate replacement. There are manufacturer’s who provide warranties on some specific parts or the entire system.
