Dog Kennels – What To Know Before You Buy

When you first buy a dog you may think that the purchase of dog kennels is a simple process involving going to your local petstore and picking up one that takes your fancy.  However, you should be aware that there are certain things that you need to know before you step foot in a store.

First, find out approximately what size your dog is likely to grow to as this will determine the size of your kennel.  A too small kennel will be cramped and uncomfortable while a kennel which is too large will let all the body heat escape, making your dog cold in winter weather or overnight.

Once you have decided on the size you will need to think about which construction materials would best suit you.  This will in part be determined by whether it is to be an indoor or outdoor kennel.

Indoor kennels are usually plastic because they are light and can be easily moved from room to room.  They are also easy to clean which is very important if you don’t want your house to smell ‘doggy’.

Outdoor kennels are usually either wooden or metal.  Wooden kennels are better for dogs who need to spend a lot of time, including overnight, in them.  This is because they are well insulated and so keep your dog warm.  Dog cage style kennels tend to be large enough for your dog to exercise and play in and so are ideal for those who want to leave their dogs outside while they go to work but who will bring them in at night.

If your dog spends time in the car, either going visiting with you or just occasional trips to the vets or dog boarding kennels then a portable kennel will need to be bought as well as one of the other types.
