Basic Gun Holster Functions

A gun holster is a tool used to restrict undesired movement of a gun when it is not in use, it is usually placed in a location where it can be easily drawn if needed. Most gun holsters are made to offer protection to the gun, secure it, and have it ready for immediate access. The need for immediate access often conflicts with the need for protection and security, so an individual will need to decide what they’re personal needs are. Choosing the right type is very important, because failure to access the weapon quickly can result in injury or death. In addition, loss or damage to the weapon could result in heavy costs or an accidental injury.

Most holsters can be operated with one hand so the gun can be drawn or put back in without the needing to use both hands. In order for this to work, the holster must be created with stiff materials which hold its shape so it does not collapse when there is no supporting object inside. A gun holster is usually attached to a person’s waist-band or belt, or it can be clipped to another piece of clothing. Some holsters have integrated support and are meant to be clipped around the ankle. Other styles may be able fit inside a pocket, which can add protection and stability to the gun, keeping it more accessible and security than if it didn’t have a holster.

Although hand gun holsters can be made from many different types of materials, the traditional choice is leather because of its rigidity and attractive appearance. Ballistic nylon is also popularly used on many modern holsters because it is wear resistant, stiff, and quite thick to provide proper protection. Some molded plastics like Kydex are also use often because of their robustness and low cost.
